Mark Wednesday 24th October in your diary as an important day if you find yourself in Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol because the Portumna Players Drama Group will be in town, for as they say, one night only.
The Portumna Players will be staging their production of Jimmy Keary’s comedy “For Better, For Worse” at The Salon Varietes Theatre in Fuengirola at 7.30pm.
The Portumna Players came into existence in 1945 and has been staging dramas every year since. The group was set up by Gerry Darcy, Eamon Hayes and Des & Aileen Murphy. Initially the group was established to raise funds for the Portumna Lawn and Table Tennis Club. Their first production was ‘Paul Twyning’ by George Shiel and following its success and the enjoyment that was had by all it was decided that the Portumna Players Drama Group Should be a permanent fixture.
On Monday’s Live on Eire Dolores O’Shea spoke with Ger Sweeney about the Fuengirola gig and what the Spanish audience could expect
The comedy tells the story of farmer Gabriel Foley who is newly married. His wife, Chrissie is stressed and unhappy, as things are not going well for the couple in and out of the bedroom. Matters aren’t helped by the caustic comments of Gabriel’s mother, Aggie, who is living with them, and by the arrival of glamorous Miriam Maguire, the upmarket daughter of an old friend of Aggie’s. Then Gabriel invites his widowed Aunt Lucy to stay for a few days.
The cast includes: Greg O’Connor, John Harte, Derek Frawley, Dolores O’Shea, Mary Lynch, Mai Ryan, Johanna Burke, Marian Frawley. Directed by Jim Hynes.
So, if you are going to be in Fuengirola on Wednesday 24th October you are guaranteed a great night and if you cannot make it, maybe you know someone in the area that you encourage to go along and support the cast on the night.
